Gender based violence and people living with disabilities

 Gender based violence is an umbrella term used for any harmful act perpetrated against some one's will and that is ascribed to socially ascribed norms between male and females. Gender based violence seems to be very rampant in our societies today as it takes varied shapes and colors, and sophisticated forms deep rooted in our society

People living with disability have double vulnerability when it comes to Gender Based Violence. They suffer the effects of Gender based violence too just like Normal people. 

According to Madam Sylvie a GBV advocate and activist, She says "In the case of rape a person with disability might not have the preference to run or fight back, probably because she is visually impaired, or crippled. This reduces their fighting power and makes them even more exposed to Gender based violence." This only means the various forms of Gender based violence like sexual violence, physical violence, emotional violence and socio economic violence will affect these people more.

 Some of the effects of Gender based violence are; unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, stigma and rejection in the society, contracting STIs in the case of rape, trauma and even death.

With all these; Is there inclusiveness when it comes to the fight against GBV? What structures are being put in place to see that people living with disability are treated fairly like other GBV survivors? Can we really say we practice social justice in this area?

    This is a very sensitive issue (GBV) that needs to be handle properly bc if justice is not rendered accordingly, most victims end up with trauma and maybe stigmatized
